Daniel Leo Chamberlain of Charlotte, N.C. passed away Feb. 9, 2017 in the Carolina Medical Center. He was 84. Mr. Chamberlain was born Jan. 9, 1933 in Williamsburg, Pa. to Orvis and Cora Shock Chamberlain.He graduated from Altoona High School in 1951. Leo served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.He retired from Ward Trucking Company in 1995, where he was a driver for 27 years. Leo was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He loved to ride in style and had many models of cars and trucks throughout the years. He had many hobbies during his life, including go-cart racing, woodworking, NASCAR and collecting unique items for his “rec” room. Leo was a loyal friend to many and was always ready with a smile, laugh or helping hand. “A man only stands tall when he stoops down to help others.”
Surviving are: two daughters, whom he loved beyond measure, Tracy McElrath and her husband Bill; and Mindy Riley and her husband Larry; three grandchildren, Brent McElrath, Molly McElrath and Brooke Riley; a sister, Annette Bowser; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Norman, Hubert, Arch and Wayne; and a sister, Norma. In order to help others, he donated his body to the Genesis Medical Education & Research Institute in Memphis, Tenn. A celebration of life gathering is being planned for this summer.
